Bingo Etiquette: How to Act in Bingo Halls
Bingo is just like any other social event. Some might even say that it transcends any social event, and has now developed its own subculture. True, bingo has its own set of rules, jargon, and its own communities. and like any other culture, there are a set of behaviors one is expected to act when in a bingo hall. Knowing what you should and should not do should be enough to keep you having fun, enjoying the game, and out of trouble. this is not meant to scare anyone though. Bingo is a fun , friendly game that can bring you a lot of excitement in one night.
First off, the best thing to remember when you are entering a bingo hall for the first time is 'BE COURTEOUS" . You can smile, greet the person in front of you or next to you. No need to have everyone think of you as a snob on your first night, especially if you find yourself in a bingo hall where a majority of the players are regulars who live in the same community, most probably in the same block. Remember, you're there to have fun. So be fun. Be friendly.
Another good tip to remember is to not be so loud when talking especially if the caller starts to call the numbers out. There are people have experienced being the object of nasty and pointed stares from other players who think that people who speak , cough, sneeze, or even breathe too loud while numbers are being called out should be punished. SEVERELY.
Don't be surprised and stare at the people who seem to have brought every earthly possession to the bingo hall with them. Bingo players are a notoriously superstitious bunch. They believe in all sorts of magic charms, amulets, lucky pieces of clothing, and the most common of all, the "lucky' chair. Fights have broken out over bingo chairs, which is why it is also important to know that you should never stand between a regular bingo player and his 'lucky' chair. Technically, bingo chairs come in a first come, first served basis, but some players do not seem to believe that, especially if they think that they have found the chair that makes them win each time they play. So if you somehow find yourself in this predicament, just give the chair up. After all, its only a chair.
Finally, be a gracious winner. Complaints have been voiced out over people who give snide remarks, use offensive language, or who give winners pointed or angry looks, just because another person won and they didn't. Remember, the game is about fun, and its not the other person's fault that you did not win. Congratulate the winners, if you know them, and set your sights on the next game. If you see offensive behavior being displayed, kindly refrain the person, or call the attention of bingo volunteers and other facilitators.
